Food as Comfort vs. Nourishment

Food is often used as comfort — and Islam does not deny comfort. It simply asks that comfort be rightly placed. When food becomes the primary source of soothing, it carries emotional weight it cannot fulfill. Ramadan gently redirects comfort back to its source: Allah. This does not mean removing pleasure from food. It means allowing food to nourish the body while comfort is sought through:
  • remembrance
  • connection
  • rest
  • duʿāʾ
When comfort is diversified, eating becomes lighter — emotionally and physically.
📖 Qur’anic Anchor “Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” Surah Ar-Raʿd (13:28) Food nourishes the body. Remembrance nourishes the heart.
🏽 SMART Journaling — Day 7
  • Specific: When do I seek comfort in food?
  • Measurable: What non-food comfort will I try?
  • Attainable: Is this accessible to me?
  • Relevant: How does this affect my relationship with food?
  • Time-bound: When will I practice this?
