Body Image, Fasting, and Gentle Acceptance

Ramadan often shifts how women see their bodies. Weight fluctuates. Energy changes. Clothes fit differently. Hunger and fullness feel unfamiliar. For many, this awakens old patterns of self-criticism or comparison. Islam invites a different gaze. Your body is not a project to fix during Ramadan. It is an amānah being purified through discipline and mercy. Fasting teaches restraint, not rejection. It softens attachment to control and redirects focus from appearance to intention. When body image concerns arise, they are not signs of failure — they are invitations to practice gentleness. Gentle acceptance does not mean ignoring health. It means releasing hostility toward your body while still caring for it. Try this reframe:
  • Instead of “My body is failing,” try “My body is adapting.”
  • Instead of “I should look different,” try “My body is serving me.”
  • Instead of comparison, choose gratitude for function.
Your body carries you through worship. It bows, stands, fasts, and serves. Treat it as a companion, not an enemy.
📖 Qur’anic Anchor “We have certainly created humankind in the best form.” Surah At-Tīn (95:4) Your worth is not measured by fluctuation.
🏽 SMART Journaling — Day 7
  • Specific: What body-critical thought comes up most often?
  • Measurable: How will I interrupt it when it appears?
  • Attainable: What compassionate replacement can I practice?
  • Relevant: How does this support my emotional peace?
  • Time-bound: When will I check in with this today?
